Bad Säckingen is located in the very southwest of Germany next to the Swiss border on the river Rhine. The city lies on the southern edge of the Black Forest area.
The old town is one of the most picturesque in southern Germany. The light-coloured towers of St. Fridolin Minster can be seen from miles around. This magnificent building, restored in the 17th and 18th centuries in baroque style, is reminiscent in size and significance of the former monastery that probably founded the town in the 7th century. Before the right branch of the Rhine was filled in in 1830, the town was an island connected to the mainland by bridges. Today, there are two bridges connecting the German with the Swiss side of the river at Stein am Rhein – the over 400-year-old wooden bridge with its 203.7 metres length is the longest covered wooden bridge in Europe.
